Welcome to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown

Connolly Hospital (CHB) is a major teaching hospital providing a range of services – acute medical & surgical service, acute psychiatric services, long stay care, daycare, outpatient, diagnostic and support services to a population of 290,000.  The Hospital’s catchment area extends into West Dublin, Meath & Kildare.  Emergency services are provided 365 days a year 24 hours a day.

Academic Centre

The Academic Centre in Connolly Hospital was opened in the summer of 1999 the building was originally a staff home. Near the end of the 1990’s James Connolly Memorial Hospital management along with Professor Fergus Gleeson and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland redeveloped one wing of the building. This wing when opened housed the Academic offices a Medical Library, seminar rooms and a two hundred seater auditorium. In the past three to four years the centre has been completely redeveloped to cater for a variety of different hospital departments and consultants offices.

The Academic Centre is home to numerous Educational Departments within the hospital.

RCSI Department of Undergraduate Medical Education

The academic centre was opened in 1999 and the RCSI undergraduate academic offices are located on the second floor.Staff include the Dean of Undergraduate Education, Dean’s Secretary, Surgical Secretary, 4 lecturers/tutors and 4 Senior Lecturers for both medicine and surgery.

RCSI Final year (Senior Cycle II) students attend daily lectures given by Hospital Consultants/Lecturers in the seminar rooms on the ground floor during term time.

The Clinical Teaching area is used for the Consultation Skills Course which is usually held twice weekly.This involves the students being filmed with an actor role laying a scenario. A Clinical Skills Laboratory is also planned for this area of the Academic Centre to give students practice with equipment in a safe environment.

The RCSI have funded 2 on call rooms and a cardiac arrest bleep for students to enable them to stay late with the on call teams. The students are also allocated to the hospital medical and surgical teams during their 4 weeks in Connolly Hospital.200 Final year students (in groups of 30) rotate through the hospital per year.

200 Third Year (Intermediate Cycle) students (in groups of 30) are allocated to medical and surgical teams in the hospital from March to June each year.

The Post Graduate Department

Mr. Joe McKeever is the current Post-Graduate Dean and Mrs. Geraldine Murphy is the Post-Graduate Co-Ordinator with offices located on the second floor of the Academic Centre.The Post-Graduate Department organises various meetings as teaching opportunities for the NCHDs here in Connolly Hospital.These meetings include:

 

  • Registrar & SHO Presentation meetings on Tuesdays at lunch-time.

  • Grand Rounds Meetings on Wednesdays at lunch-time (open to all hospital staff).

  • Bedside Tutorials for doctors who are about to take their MRCPI Part 2 examinations.

  • Final Year Medical Students Orientation sessions.

  • Induction sessions for new doctors (NCHDs).

  • Annual Research Symposium.

  • Annual Speaker of the Year Award.

  • Annual GP Study Day.

 

Various other departmental meetings and journal clubs are also run here in the academic centre on a weekly basis.

The Department of Psychiatry is based in Ash ward Connolly Hospital. Sector headquarter is located in Techport Coolmine industrial Estate which incorporates Community psychiatric services .We provide Liaison psychiatric service for Connolly Hospital. Inpatient acute psychiatric facilities are in Ash ward. Outpatient clinics are in Connolly hospital as well as in Roselawn health centre.

Department of Psychiatry provides undergraduate as well as postgraduate training programme.

Undergraduate programme is for fourth year medical students of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In addition to their Clinical attachment students also attend weekly Wednesday and Friday tutorial in the Academic Centre in Connolly Hospital.

Postgraduate training include basic and higher medical training provided via RCSI psychiatric rotation scheme as well by IPTC.It also includes weekly journal club and case conference presentation with Bursary Prize for best case and journal presentation held in the Academic Centre here in Connolly Hospital.

We are in process of increasing research activities at Connolly hospital and Department promotes research activities undertaken by postgraduate trainees.
