The Nursing P ractice Development Department is an area that continually examines the care given to patients to ensure that it is evidence based. We are actively involved in the professional development of staff. We are at the forefront of multi-disciplinary research and are committed to the concept of collaborative care. The Nursing Practice Development Department embraces an innovative approach to patient/client care which recognises the importance of an effective professional team and places high value on evidence/research based practice. Underpinning our Nursing Practice Development Department is a philosophy which recognises strong nursing ethos and teamwork within a clinical governance framework necessary to provide holistic care to meet patient/client needs. It is innovative in its approach to care, to nurses, and the multidisciplinary team working closely together, which involves crossing professional boundaries. Audit and evaluation of care given to meet individual care needs as well as clinical requirements is integrated in our work. We endeavor to continue to develop nursing, the distribution of information and the promotion of a knowledge base generation to ensure patient centered care.
The Nursing Practice Development Department in CHB is staffed by the Nursing Practice Development Co-ordinator, Clinical Placement Co-ordinators, Clinical Practice Support Nurses, a Student Allocations Officer and has clerical support.
Teamwork is fundamental to practice development and the department works with the Multidisciplinary Teams, Centres of Nurses Education, Nursing Midwifery and Planning Development Unit, Third level institutes and other external agencies.
The Nursing Practice Development Department was established in 1997 to progress the frontiers of nursing knowledge. This includes engaging in the evaluation of practice development and audit, disseminating our findings to a wider audience, and facilitating and empowering nurses to develop professionally. The department continues to be dynamic and endeavours to meet the needs of the changing environment and scope of nursing practice.
With the introduction of the Bachelor of Science programme for undergraduate nurses, the department is now charged with and has the responsibility for coordinating the clinical placements of the nursing students in partnership with Dublin City University.
The department is involved in supporting the Adaptation Period for Candidate Nurses, in preparation for registration with An Bord Altranais
We facilitate the orientation and mentorship of newly appointed staff nurses at ward level, while delivering and coordinating ongoing educational sessions within the hospital and with our partner services.
